Sapa has no airport and no railway. Buses from Hanoi, Noi Bai airport and Ninh Binh run straight into Sapa town and stop at their company's office, most of them along Điện Biên Phủ street. The night trains from Hanoi stop at Ga Lào Cai, about an hour below Sapa by road, where shared cars and vans (from about 175,000₫) and the route 01 public bus go up to town.

Bus into town, or train to Lao Cai

By bus. Sleeper, cabin and limousine buses from Hanoi take about 5 hours 30 minutes to 6 hours 30 minutes and drop at their company's office in town, mostly on Điện Biên Phủ street: HK Buslines at number 734, Inter Bus Lines at 436, G8 Sapa Open Tour at 411, S Trip at 697, Asian Bus Travel at 100A.

Many of them also pick up at Noi Bai airport; the Hanoi to Sapa page compares every company and the train. From Ninh Binh, direct cabin buses take about 7 to 9 hours 30 minutes.

By train. The railway stops at Ga Lào Cai, in the city of Lao Cai, not in Sapa. The night trains from Hanoi, SP3 and SP7, arrive at 05:50 and 06:27; from there it is about an hour up the mountain road.

Since 1 July 2025 Sapa is in the enlarged Lào Cai province, which absorbed Yên Bái; Sapa itself kept its name.

Leaving Sapa

To Hanoi. Buses leave from the same offices on Điện Biên Phủ from about 06:00 until after 23:00, and many go on to Noi Bai airport. By train you go down to Lao Cai first: SP8 leaves at 12:05 for an evening arrival in Hanoi, and SP4 at 21:50 overnight.

To Ninh Binh. Direct cabin buses run morning and night, about 7 hours 45 minutes to 9 hours 30 minutes, to Tam Coc, the Trang An boat station or Ninh Binh city.

To Ha Giang. Office-to-office buses take about six hours; the Ha Giang page has the times and fares both ways.

Lao Cai station to Sapa: shared car, van or route 01 bus

Shared cars and vans wait for the night trains at Ga Lào Cai and take about an hour to Sapa town, from about 175,000₫ to 312,500₫ sold online for October 2026 departures, the first at 05:30. Lao Cai's route 01 public bus runs from the station square to the church in the centre of Sapa.

Shared cars and vans. For October 2026 departures, seats from Lao Cai Railway Station to Sapa were on sale online, about an hour, from 05:30 and through the day:

Route 01 public bus. It runs from the square in front of Ga Lào Cai to the church in the centre of Sapa.

The province's newspaper, Báo Lào Cai, reported it running in 2025, with a three-day pause over Tết.

Going down. The same cars and vans run from Sapa to Lao Cai station for the midday and night trains: SP8 leaves Lao Cai at 12:05 and SP4 at 21:50. Travellers in 2026 report the first hour down from Sapa as hard on the stomach.

Ninh Binh to Sapa: direct cabin bus

Direct cabin and sleeper buses run from Tam Coc, the Trang An area and Ninh Binh city to Sapa in about 7 to 9 hours 30 minutes, morning and night. For October 2026 seats were on sale online from about 525,000₫, most single cabins 575,000₫ to 756,000₫.
